Learn Shopify development after Academy: a free 6‑week plan
Shopify Academy closes on October 29, 2026. The material it taught still lives on shopify.dev, but nobody gives you an order to read it in. This is that order: six weeks for themes, four for apps, about an hour a day, with something you can show at the end of every week. Looking for a specific course? Each Academy course is mapped here.
Updated October 19, 2026. Free, no account needed.
Before you start
Everything below is free. You need a computer that runs Node.js, a free GitHub account and a free Shopify dev store. A dev store is password protected and can't take real orders, which makes it the right place to break things.
Each week has a goal, a short list of things to do, the docs to read, and a line that says what exists when the week is done. Where a free lesson on learnshopify.dev covers the same ground, it is listed. Those lessons are optional: the plan works with shopify.dev alone.
Theme development in six weeks
The order matters more than the speed. Structure comes first, so that every Liquid line you write later has a place to live. The last two weeks are the ones that make you hireable: performance, review and shipping.
Week 1
Set up, and read a real theme
Run Shopify's own theme on your own store and know where every file lives before you write any Liquid.

Week 2
Liquid: output, filters and logic

App development in four weeks
Start this after the theme weeks, or alongside them if you already write JavaScript. You build one small app on your dev store and get it to a released version. The app path lessons 1 to 15 on learnshopify.dev cover the first two weeks of this plan for free.
Week 1
Scaffold an app and run it on your store
A real app, open in your store's admin, that you can find your way around.

What to put on your profile next to your badge
Academy badges stay visible through the end of 2027 and credentials stay valid until January 1, 2028, so keep yours if you have one. What a client or an agency lead looks at first is work they can open.
